How to Choose a Walk-Behind Road Roller: Weight, Drum Type, Engine
A walk-behind road roller handles the jobs where full-size equipment either physically will not fit or simply does not pay: sidewalks and yard driveways, pothole repair, narrow pockets along kerbs, trench backfill, compacting the base under block paving. Choosing wrong is expensive. Too little weight means under-compaction and settlement within the first season, while excess vibration on a thin layer destroys the edge and pushes a wave ahead of the drum. Below is how to work through the four key parameters in order, with allowances for the climate and logistics of Kazakhstan.
Operating weight and job class
Weight is the first and most important criterion: static weight plus vibration determine how deep the layer is worked. In the FURD FYL series operating weight ranges from roughly 450 to 1600 kg, which covers the full spectrum of municipal and urban work. Match the machine to the nature of the job rather than assuming heavier is always better:
- Light class (~450–750 kg)— FYL-450, FYL-600, FYL-700, FYL-750. Paving slabs on a bedding layer, yards, footpaths, park areas, thin asphalt courses and small pothole repairs. Easy to manoeuvre where space is tight.
- Medium class (~800 kg)— FYL-800C, FYL-800CS, FYL-800P and the FYL-S600/S700 series. Bigger pothole jobs, narrow driveways, hardstandings, approaches to buildings, base compaction before laying.
- Heavy-duty class (up to ~1600 kg)— FYL-R1600T. Thick, dense layers, and spots that need maximum compaction but won't take a full-size roller.
A practical rule: for a thin final layer, choose the lighter machine— a heavy roller will crush the surface and push it out of shape. Bases, backfill and dense layers need more weight and harder vibration.
The drum: size, type, working width and vibration
The FYL series uses a twin smooth vibratory drum (tandem) layout, approximately Ø350 × 635 mm, with a vibration force of about 20 kN. What that means in practice:
- A smooth drum is the right choice for asphalt and fine-grained materials: it produces an even, closed surface with no marks. Padfoot (ribbed) drums are needed on cohesive soils, but for road and municipal work the smooth tandem is more versatile.
- Working widthequals the drum width (around 635 mm), and that sets how many passes each strip takes. Overlap adjacent strips by 5–10 cm so you don't leave unworked joints.
- Two drums versus one: the tandem layout compacts both the leading and trailing line in a single pass, so productivity is higher and the surface flatter than with single-drum rollers or plate compactors.
- On thin layers, vibration force matters more than raw weight: a dynamic force of around 20 kN works the material without excessive static pressure. The Ø350 mm drum diameter also enters the surface more gently and leaves fewer marks on starting and stopping.
Engine: petrol or diesel, cooling, starting type
The power unit directly affects service life, running costs and convenience in the Kazakhstan climate. FURD offers both platforms.
Petrol (Honda)
Models with the P index — for example FYL-800P and FYL-S600P — are fitted with the petrol Honda GX390. Advantages: easy starting in cold weather, quiet and smooth running, lower weight, simple servicing, readily available fuel. This is a sensible choice for municipal and utility crews working in an intermittent pattern: drive out to a pothole repair, complete the section, move on.
Diesel
Models with the C index (FYL-800C, CF186 diesel) and CS index (FYL-800CS, water-cooled diesel) come into their own in intensive shift work: more torque under load, lower fuel consumption, longer engine life. The key detail here is cooling:
- Air coolingis simpler and less demanding, but on long stints in the heat (southern Kazakhstan, +35 °C and above) the engine runs hotter.
- Water cooling (CS index) holds temperature more stably at full load in summer heat, which is critical for contractors working full shifts. That is what the FYL-800CS is built for.
Look separately at the starting type. A manual (recoil) starter is cheaper and more reliable, but takes effort in winter and on a diesel. An electric startersaves the operator time and effort when the machine is started again and again through a shift — worth having on crews that move from job to job. Check the specification of your chosen model with your manager.
Control: walk-behind, self-propelled, remote
The control type is about operator safety and productivity, not just convenience:
- Walk-behind (handle-guided)— FYL-450/600/700/750 and most light models. The operator walks behind and steers by the handle. Best on open, level ground: footpaths, yards, hardstandings.
- Self-propelled— the drum is engine-driven, so the operator sets the direction instead of pushing the machine along. That cuts fatigue on long shifts and large volumes.
- Remote (radio) control — the FYL-R800T, FYL-R900T and FYL-R1600T series. The operator controls the roller over a radio link without standing right next to the machine. This matters fundamentally at kerbs, walls and slopes, and especially along trenches, where walking beside the roller is dangerous due to the risk of edge collapse and crushing. Remote control takes the operator out of the danger zone and improves accuracy near obstacles.
Operation: drum watering, transport, servicing
Three points that are often overlooked at purchase, yet they determine the quality of the work and the cost of ownership:
- Drum watering system.On hot asphalt you have to water the drum, or bitumen sticks to it and tears the fresh surface. Look at tank capacity and how evenly the spray works — in southern Kazakhstan heat the water goes fast, and a bigger tank means fewer stops to refill.
- Weight and dimensions for transport.Light models (450–750 kg) go onto a trailer or light van with ramps and a couple of hands; anything from 800 kg up — heavy-duty units especially — needs loading and transport worked out in advance. Moving kit between sites shapes the class you buy as much as the work itself.
- Servicing.A smooth drum and an engine unit you can actually get at (Honda, CF186) make servicing easy. Check that consumables and service back-up exist inside Kazakhstan — on continuous work that counts for more than headline specs.
On documentation for Kazakhstan: equipment in this class falls under TR CU 010/2011 with EAC marking, and self-propelled models are issued an SPM/e-SPM (self-propelled machine passport).
