About the machines

What is a walk-behind road roller

Walk-behind road rolleris a compact self-propelled or hand-guided machine with two smooth vibratory drums. It compacts asphalt, sand-and-gravel bases and soil in the places full-size equipment can't reach — or where bringing it in simply doesn't pay on a small volume. Sidewalks and courtyard driveways, pothole and localised surface repair, trench backfill along kerbs and manholes, bases for landscaping: that's where a walk-behind roller earns its keep.

Compaction comes from two things working together — the machine's own weight and alternating drum vibration. FURD FYL models run two drums of roughly Ø350×635 mm with a vibration force of around 20 kN. The smooth tandem leaves an even, closed surface with no marks, which is exactly what thin asphalt and finishing layers need. On drive and control the FYL range covers the whole spread, from light hand-guided machines to radio-controlled rollers for safe work near slopes and trenches.

Selection

How to choose a walk-behind roller

Four things to settle, in order — they drive compaction quality and what the machine costs to run.

1. Operating weight

Light 450–750 kg for sidewalks, courtyards and thin asphalt. Mid-range around 800 kg for pothole repair and bases. Heavy-duty up to 1600 kg for dense, thick layers. On thin finishing layers go lighter, or you'll distort the surface.

2. Drum and vibration

A smooth Ø350×635 mm tandem with roughly 20 kN of vibration force gives you an even, mark-free finish. Compaction width sets the number of passes, so plan on a 5–10 cm overlap between strips.

3. Engine

Honda GX390 petrol (index P) starts easily from cold and suits stop-start work. CF186 diesel (index C) is for intensive, full-shift use. Water cooling (index CS) holds performance steady through the summer heat in southern Kazakhstan.

4. Control

Hand-guided works on open, level ground. Self-propelled saves the operator on big volumes. Remote control (R series) keeps him clear of trenches, slopes and walls — anywhere walking beside the roller is asking for trouble.

Applications

Where a walk-behind roller works

Compact rollers get into ground large machines can't touch: sidewalks, pedestrian and cycle paths, courtyard driveways, pothole and localised asphalt repair, trench backfill after utility work, bases for paving slabs, yards and parking bays. In tight spaces it comes down to machine dimensions, drum width and how safely you can work near kerbs and slopes.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about walk-behind rollers

How does a walk-behind roller differ from a ride-on road roller?
A walk-behind roller — hand-guided or a small self-propelled machine — weighs roughly 450–1600 kg and is controlled from the handle or by radio, with the operator often walking alongside. A ride-on roller is a bigger animal: the operator sits at the wheel, the machine drives itself, and it's built for large areas and thick layers. Walk-behind rollers go on sidewalks, courtyards, pothole repair and tight sites; ride-on rollers go on roads, highways and industrial areas.
Which walk-behind roller should I choose for sidewalks and courtyards?
For pedestrian zones, cycle paths and courtyard driveways with a thin asphalt layer, look at the light hand-guided FYL-450/600/700/750. Their weight treats thin surfaces gently, and the narrow ~635 mm drum covers a path in one or two passes. If the courtyard driveway carries a load-bearing layer, step up to a mid-range machine of around 800 kg.
Walk-behind roller or plate compactor — which is better?
Different tools, different jobs. A roller gives you evenness and compaction along the length, so it wins on asphalt, thin layers, long paths and cohesive bases. A plate compactor drives concentrated energy downwards, which works better on sand, crushed stone, in narrow trenches and around foundations. On a large site you'll often use both, at different stages. More on this in ourcomparison article.
What walk-behind roller weight is needed for pothole repair?
Pothole and localised asphalt repair usually calls for a mid-range machine of around 800 kg — FYL-800C, FYL-800CS, FYL-800P, or the FYL-S600/S700 series. The smooth vibratory drum at ~20 kN force compacts the hot mix, and the short wheelbase lets you work carefully along the patch edges and the joint with the old surface. On large patches, an electric starter is worth having.
Petrol or diesel walk-behind roller — which to choose?
Petrol machines with the Honda GX390 (index P) are lighter, quieter, simpler to maintain and better starters in frost — municipal and utility crews with stop-start workloads tend to pick them. Diesel (index C, CF186) takes over on intensive full-shift work: more torque, longer engine life, lower consumption. Working long hours in summer heat, go for the water-cooled diesel (index CS, FYL-800CS).
What is a remote-controlled roller and why is it needed?
The FYL-R800T/R900T/R1600T series runs off a radio remote, so the operator drives the machine from a safe distance and stays out of the risk zone at the edge of a slope, beside a deep trench or hard against a wall. It's partly occupational safety, partly access to spots you simply couldn't put a man in — and it cuts his vibration exposure over a long shift.
Is a drum water-spray system necessary?
On hot asphalt, yes — a sprinkler tank is essential. Without wetting, bitumen sticks to the drum and tears grains out of the surface, and the pavement is ruined. Check tank capacity and how evenly the water feeds: in the heat of southern Kazakhstan the tank empties fast, and extra capacity saves you stopping to refill.
What documents do you provide with the roller?
Every machine ships with a certificate of conformity carrying the EAC mark (TR CU 010/2011) and an SPM (self-propelled machine passport, SPM/e-SPM) for registration. Legal entities also receive an ESF (electronic invoice). The full set — invoice, contract, ESF, certificate and machine passport — travels with the delivery.
Is there warranty and service in Kazakhstan?
Yes. FURD KZ is an official dealer: a 12-month warranty, an in-house service department and a stock of genuine spare parts in Kazakhstan (drums, scrapers, vibration unit components, consumables for Honda engines and diesels). Downtime caused by missing parts costs more than the price difference between models, so service is part of the delivery, not an option.
How do I buy a walk-behind roller and what about delivery?
Send us a request through the site or message us on WhatsApp. A manager will go through the job with you — surface type, layer thickness, site conditions — then pick a model and quote the price and delivery. Popular models ship from stock in Kazakhstan, with logistics to any region and the paperwork done properly. Do check current price and availability with a manager.
